Learning how to speak well in front of an audience will take students far in life. The Young Center’s Great American Youth Debate Oratorical Contest offers students a chance to hone their skills and win $1500 in the process.
This year’s speaking topics include race relations in the US, the future of American democracy, and government and political polarization. Students in grades 9-12 (including graduating seniors) are eligible to compete.
Selected applicants will be required to write and present a five-minute speech based on one of those selected topics. The virtual preliminary rounds will take place on Saturday, May 15 from 9 am – 12 pm on Zoom. Judges will evaluate each presentation based on speech organization, content, and speaker persuasiveness.
Top speakers will advance to the final rounds of competition, which take place on May 29th. The time and location have yet to be announced. (Note: This is a Los Angeles based organization)
Deadline to apply is May 5, 2021.
